Providing flexible rental assistance and case management is the backbone of effective homelessness prevention. We assist families in solving their immediate crisis and making plans for the future. The Salvation Army’s Emergency Assistance (EMAST) is a comprehensive program designed to help meet the basic needs of families experiencing a crisis and at risk of homelessness. Provided resources include:

Rent and mortgage assistance
Utilities assistance
Food distribution
Clothing/Furniture/Household items
Burial assistance
Bus passes/Gas vouchers for transportation
Information and referral
Case Management
Seasonal programs: School supplies and school shoes, holiday food and gifts

This assistance is available at 8 locations throughout the Greater Washington DC area. Our social service workers develop a program plan with families to stabilize the crisis and move the family toward self-sufficiency. In order to achieve this goal, our dedicated staff makes referrals as needed to partnering agencies and follow-up on the referral process to determine the client’s progress. Last year, we provided 226,276 meals, rental assistance to 1,535 households and utility assistance to 3,467 families.
